Literacy

The International Mother Language Day, celebrated each year on 21 February, is an opportunity to promote linguistic and cultural diversity as well as multilingualism. What actions are planned to promote literacy and national languages in Africa? The ADEA Inter-Country Quality Node on Literacy and National Languages (ICQN-LNL) provides an overview of the situation.

There is a need to improve literacy to achieve the higher goal of better meeting the demand for education for children and adults. Training structures at all levels need to ensure there is always a built-in link between literacy/training and students' professional activities, including the different elements of their environment.

September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day at the 14^th session of UNESCO’s General Conference on October 26, 1966, to enable governments, civil society, and stakeholders to highlight improvements in global literacy rates and to discuss persistent obstacles to literacy in the world.

World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated every year on April 23, a symbolic date for world literature. This is the day in 1616 on which William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died.
